Scraps

Today, I spent the better part of my day doing a scrap busting session. Oh goodness. I finally pulled all of my quilting cotton scraps - to include the stuff that was under a fat quarter - out. I ended up sorting by color and put all of the colors in their own bags. From there, I decided to work on the blue scraps, since I (for some reason) have the most of those. I probably should've started on something I'd get through a bit faster. Oops.

I cut what I needed to down to a "manageable" size and started piecing things together. Once I got several pieces together, I decided to cut the blocks to 9"x9".

The first few blue blocks

Blue scraps everywhere

No really, everywhere

Blue blocks ready to be cut down to size

12 blocks done
Wow... I have a lot more work to do than I thought!

On another note, I have SEVERAL posts I'm behind on. I finished 3 of 4 quilts for Thanksmas. I'm waiting on the rest of the backing fabric for the other one & then I have one more quilt to finish up. I probably *should* be doing that one before worrying about these scraps, but I'm tired of looking at them so, they take priority.

Rion's Quilt - Fast Four Patch Quilt

Pattern: Fast Four-Patch Quilt: http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/2014/09/fast-four-patch-quilt-tutorial.html

Fabric: I bought everything from Joann's

For Thanksmas, I decided to make my brother's family quilts. Rion asked for blue and orange. He didn't ask for green, but I had some inside information that it's his favorite color, so I made sure to incorporate it too.

Aiden's quilt - Awesome Lap Quilt

Pattern: "Awesome" Lap Quilt - http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/11/awesome-lap-quilt.html
Fabric:

For Thanksmas, I decided to make my brother's family their quilts. Aiden's was purple, yellow/gold, black, and Steelers. I got all of the fabrics from Joann's. This was a fun quilt to make. Fast enough to be something you could do in a weekend or so.

Adam's Quilt - Double Slice Layer Cake

For Thanksmas, I decided to make my brother's family their quilts. Adam's (my brother) was a Dr Seuss and Cowboy's quilt/ He and I have a running joke about which is better - Green Eggs & Ham or Cat in the Hat. (It's obviously Green Eggs & Ham.)

Baby Girl L's Quilt - Layer Cake Lemonade

Animal Hill Farm Layer Cake: http://www.craftsy.com/supplies/kit/rjr-apple-hill-farm-pre-cuts/1901

Layer Cake Lemonade Quilt Pattern: http://beeinmybonnetco.blogspot.com/2013/11/layer-cake-lemonade-quilt-and-leftover.html

We finally have a niece on my side of the family! That being said... I didn't know that when I bought this fabric. No one knew the gender of baby, so I went with a general farm theme. I love the Layer Cake Lemonade pattern. I've been really enjoying working with the layer cakes in general. David the dog really liked this one and didn't want it to leave the house.

Recovery Quilt - Layer Cake Lemonade

Almost three weeks ago, I had surgery. The week of surgery, I was working on the quilt for our motorhome. I decided I really wanted to be able to *finish* something before surgery.

I started working on our newest (not-yet-born) niece's quilt. I loved the pattern and how easily it came together so much, that I decided to make myself a recovery quilt.

I used the Layer Lemonade Quilt Pattern. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this pattern. If you have a 40 piece layer cake (I have a couple that are 20 pieces of fabric), the top whips up in about an hour or so.

I used the Canyon fabric for this quilt.

The darker fabrics
What I decided for the backing, binding, & thread

One of the things I wanted to do with this quilt was to use up some of my left over batting from some other projects. I laid out a bunch of scrap pieces (over the top of the quilt) and figured out what would need to go where.

The perfect layout of the batting.

I love Google and Pinterest. You can learn how to do ANYTHING! In order to use scrap batting, you have to sew it together using a zig-zag stitch.

Zig-zagging my way to the perfect piece of batting.
Once I was done with piecing the batting, I laid everything out, pinned all of the layers together, and started quilting it all. I pieced the binding together & bound it as well.

Everything laid out
David thinks it's for him
And done! - top
Done!
Done - back
I love the subtle print on the binding.
All told, I think I had about 6 hours into this quilt. Maybe a little less. Nice and quick! Of course, I don't do fancy quilting (I'm going to be doing a class on free motion quilting soon), so that lessens the time as well.

The quilt did a great job of helping me recover. I was so happy I had it. Now to get a couple of others finished!
